Never given a chance.
This picture was taken in about 1945 when neither Mommy or Bob Wickersham were not yet married to their eventual spouses. Neither had children yet. They were a couple of sorts on and off during these years. Mommy's closest friends, Joe and Louise, and Mom would go to Bob's farm and they would all spend weekends together.
Then Bob and Mommy married other people, had children. Bob's wife died and Mommy had divorced. The two reunited in 1979 ?. Bob's family opened up into their lives and Bob was very generous with us. In some aspects we were very close and Bob opened up his home to us. Bob came to Bonaire to visit us and we stayed at his place when we came to the US in 1981.
I enjoyed tremendously hearing Mommy and Bob reciting poetry ? spontaneously where one would start a poem and the other would finish it.
Sadly, in 1985, the relationship was sabotaged by an insider. It caused Bob to withdraw a promisory note that he'd given money to Mommy for a part in her Bahia Cai project. In an instant Mommy lost the property she had worked on for nearly 20 years (more examples of what that entailed). In a fraction of a moment, Bob withdrew his promise to allow Mommy take out the carpet from under Mommy and Mommy lost the whole property. This despite Mommy having made payment on Bob's promissory note and owing less than $20,000. But by now, Mommy was not in a state in any shape to fight this sabotage. Mommy's whole future well being relied on this plan / project to evaporate in an instant.
Of course Mommy never recoved from the financial and emotional blow. But was most harmful to her that someone so close to her would want to harm her so devastingly.
I personally believe that this was the physical trigger that started the brain tumor and horrific arthritis that wind up consuming her for the remainder of her short life. Within six years she died a very painful death.

Not only did this treachery strip Mommy of her retirement and health, but it also stripped me of my ability to finally persue an education for myself. This treachery invoked a whole set of responsibilities that I had hoped would be offsetting to someone else while I pursued my education. This thought was based on an agreement made between the treacherous perpetraitor and myself years before.
There are really only so many blows a person can come back from. This was Mommy's last blow. This was her death knell. It was all downhill from here. I'm convinced the person who did this to her intended this outcome.

Embarrassed of their mom's profession. Kid sabotage and treachery mother. Plumbers, cleaners, unconventional sources of income.
Born on December 7, 1923 in Glenside, PA. I would love to have ever seen a picture of her mom, my grandmother. But any pictures mommy had were burned up in the fire. When mommy was on her sick bed in 1992, Earl, my cousin, came to visit Mommy to say goodbye. He brought a picture of Mommy's dad, my grandfather. I can see the resemblance of her in him. Do you? Every moment of my existence.

Mommy talked to that picture of her dad, whom she hadn't seen in a photograph since 1966, introduced her dad to me and said how proud he was of me.

This is approximately what Lake Henry and its surroundings looked like on this day.
January 8, 1966: Air Force burned my brother to death, killed our cats, destroyed our home, caused irreversable and unimaginable pain and suffering to my mom and dad. The Air Force essentially erased my brother from the face of the earth and further erased our entire past up until January 8, 1966.
I've never seen a picture of my grandmother. The only pictures I have of Bob are on this website. The only picture I have of my mom prior to 1966 are in this website.

Bobbie adored her dad. His nickname for her was Buddy. Mommy spent time around her dad's quary business. She remembers him getting a big Mack truck and she wanted to learn how to drive it. The family also had a studebacker with a rumble seat. 1991 member of a class mate at 50th reunion told us about a story she had about her dad's studebacker. both Mommy and Cousin Ed told me about Miss Debonaire. She was Granddad's lover. I remember Mommy telling me how impressed she was with her Mom letting Miss Debonaire to be a Granddad's bedside while he was dying. Mommy explained that Grandmother was a very proud woman and this was a huge act of love. Mommy had previously shown me where Ms Debonaire lived. When I visited Cousin Ed in 1996, he also showed me where she lived.
Female headed household. No social security or health insurance.
Poly glotkids in 10 years. Dozens of other american families, known for being very "studious", who could not even speak Dutch after having gone through the system for years and had no local friends.
Mommy had a tire flat on the highway. Vickey, me, Simmy, and cats were in the back of the car. Mommy crying while kind man stopped to help her change the tire.

1963
Kenny dscribed to me that 1964 was when Grand Father and Grand Mother came over from Scotland. From the pictures, it looks like it was Mommy and Daddy's happiest days. their kids were together and doing well. Daddy's beloved Uncle Coatsie and Dodie were visiting, and his brother, his brother's wife and two kids were visiting. It's funny that after the fire, it was only Coatsie who "looked after" Mommy's well being by checking in and having us over. Mommy told me that as much as she loved Dodie, Dodie never mentioned the fire or Bob again. And she never heard from her in laws.
Fast forward to 1985, I was living in Miami with Mommy and Uncle Leslie and Aunt Doreen were visiting Coatsie in Boca Raton and the kids came to visit with us a night in Miami. It was the same night that Vickey was flying in from Philly to celebrate Christmas with us and we all got to be together.
After Mommy passed away, I remember calling Aunt Doreen to tell her Mommy had passed and I remember telling her very proudly that Mommy never sleep alone after her brain cancer diagnosis. She said she was happy to hear that.
Hang on Slupy.
Mommy had suffered for years with terrible back pain. All those years she could not afford medical care. My sister got a job as a newly minted electrical engineer. Her job provided for her to add Mommy to her medical insurance.
This event was very sadly symbolic of the end of mommy's life. My sister had a very jealous and clingy (other word) boyfriend.
The day of the surgery, the boyfriend, demanded that he be with the three of us in the hospital. (We later learned that he also demanded to be in on all phone calls and any interation my sister had with anyone. This was essentially the end of my sister being a friend of me and mommy but an adversary. the surgery was scheduled to be at 8 am. But there was an emergency for the doctor and he could not start the surgery until 6 pm. This awful man was with us the whole day in the hospital room sitting and staring as mommy was waiting for perhaps a spine nerve terminating surgery. If you've ever prepared for and had surgery, you know how miserable that is. In my mom's case she hadn't eaten since the previous night. She'd had no pain medications. She was in extreme pain.
Then when the surgery was over at around 1 am, this awful man demanded again to be in my mom's private room where she was thrashing around with pain in the bed having had a 1 foot long rod inserted in her back with a very long cut in her back. Mommy was out of her mind in pain.

I'd gotten the best job I every had - finally - in NYC at Bank of Tokyo. I loved it and they loved me. The pay was $42,000 and that was a lot for me even though living and commuting to Philly was expensive. I was just settling in making some local friends. I was hoping I might even get a boyfriend. That would be nice.
Trip to Bonaire.
